フランスの詩人アンドレ・ブルトンがニューヨークに住んでいたとき、いつも通る街角に黒メガネの物乞いがいて、首に下げた札には
私は目が見えません
と書いてありました。彼の前には施し用のアルミのお椀が置いてあるのですが、通行人はみんな素通り、お椀にコインはいつもほとんど入っていません。ある日、ブルトンはその下げ札の言葉を変えてみたらどうか、と話しかけました。物乞いは「旦那のご随意に」。ブルトンは新しい言葉を書きました。
それからというもの、お椀にコインの雨が降りそそぎ、通行人たちは同情の言葉をかけていくようになりました。物乞いにもコインの音や優しい声が聞こえます。数日後、物乞いは「旦那、なんと書いてくださったのですか」。
下げ札にはこう書いてあったそうです。
春はまもなくやってきます。
でも、私はそれを見ることができません。
誰が見てもうらぶれた物乞いです。黒メガネをかけているのだから盲人であることも分かります。「私は目が見えません」は言葉の意味をなしていないのです。
アンドレ・ブルトンの言葉のほうには、訴えるものがあり、憐れみを乞う力があり、人に行動を促す力、もっとえげつなく言えば集金能力がありました。目的はそれだったのです。読んでもらって、施しの気持ちを起こさせ、施しをいただくこと。
目的を果たしてこそ、言葉です。
